Does Your Past Own Your Future?

Breaking The Chains -

Breaking The Chains –

Many are familiar with the history of slavery and even with its use today and the horrors it brings to its victims. I am sure it is not a term too many of us would happily use to describe anything to do with our lives today. Yet, how many of us have been coloured, shaped, scared and wounded by our past to the extent where we cannot see positively for ourselves today let alone believe there could be a future and a purpose for us tomorrow?

We adapt.   We are effective at adapting to our circumstances. But some of us some how learn to rise in the face of adversity as I wrote in my blog Being The Catalyst.  So I ask again “does your past own your future?”

Whilst going through difficult and rough times we pick up what can only be best described as ‘emotional baggage’ and we condition ourselves in our responses and behavioural patterns in order to cope.  Remember the rule or principle remains the same, whether its to acquire a good habit or bad.  Repeat something often enough and it moves into something you no longer have to think about, you just instinctively do it. So, for example, a difficult financial experience may mean you no longer like to open your mail.  You do not answer your phone easily or you don’t do a true budget anymore, you convince yourself its best to play ‘Ostrich’ instead of facing challenges head on.  But, these adapted behaviours, are just a visible extension of the hidden chains that we carry in our mind.  I would say, in this sense we can very much still be slaves and victims to our past and we may or may not even know it.

Being held in check by your past is the worst position to be in, as it literally can deny you of your optimum future.

Today! is all we ever have and with that comes choice.  “Do I change or do I kept the status quo?”

We have all heard the analogy of time being measured as falling sand in an hour-glass.  So whether you choose to do some thing or choose to do nothing, the fact is the sand keeps falling. So why waste time in the present being stuck or being the person you are not happy with, due to a past that is exactly that, the past?

We have all heard the analogy of time being measured as falling sand in an hour-glass.  So whether you choose to do some thing or choose to do nothing, the fact is the sand keeps falling.

There is a well know story in the bible about the distribution of the gift of money called Talents( the currency for that time), to three  people.  What it illustrated was that all three were given varying degrees of wealth to invest (the Talents) in any way they chose to whilst the master was away. They would all have the same period of time but when that time was to end they did not know, all they knew was that the master would be back and he expected good news.  Long story short two gained interest doubling what they were originally given, while the other buried his one and only Talent out of fear of loss. (Matthew 25:14-30)

Now not all fear is bad. Fear has is purpose, as does any emotion but irrational, deceptive fear is one of our greatest foes, and it will rob you of any potential interest to your life.  That interest represents growth, increase, accumulation, and wealth in the richest and greatest sense of the word.  Because true wealth, impacts your mind, body soul and spirit. Financial abundance is not a benchmark to illustrate you are not owned by your past.  To be truly free of your past and in relative control of your future means there is a clear peace or settlement in what has now gone before, and a deep understanding that today is a new day in your life and anything is possible tomorrow, if you are willing to invest what you have in the best way you can without, hiding it or burying it.

Everyone has the ability to impact someone positively. To be an encouragement. To do something that needs doing, in a way only they can do it.  I believe that No one can do you, like you.  That is why we are all unique.

So have courage and work it out, it may not be a simple or easy journey but every link removed from a chain not only shortens it, also weakens it, because it no longer has the extension it once had or even better, it is broken.

Keep developing you, keep progressing and doing you like no one else can.

About aquene7

I am a mother, a grandmother and Christian, all an essential part of who I am. I happened upon Blogging and found out how to mesh something I have done through out my life which was encouraging those who were friends and family and my love of writing. In doing my usual personal development I came in to the world of coaching and totally fell in love with it and I am currently studying to become a Personal Performance/Life Coach with The Coaching Academy. I absolutely love writing and thought this would be good way to combine these three passions in one place. I hope you find my blog does what it says on the tin, which is to encourage readers with positive and motivational posts:-) Update: 23/3/14: I finally decided to put a face to my blog:-)
