Marking Time? – Life’s To Short I Say!

So 2014 is here, and it is the fourth day. How’s is going so far? What is going to define 2014 from 2013 for you? Do you know where are you going?

Stephen Covey says “To begin with the end in Mind” in his book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Like any journey, you first need to know where you want to get to, in order to then determine how you are to get there.  So where do you want to be by the end of December 2014? If you think that’s too far ahead, you are already on the path to missing the boat.

Its important “To begin with the end in Mind”

What Are your goals based on? Are they more about impulse and what’s in trend right now or are your goals deeply set and clearly thought out?  Many people will be for want of a better word ‘trending’ right now.  In other words following what’s popular and common place for the month of January – setting goals for loosing weight, planning holidays, looking to start paying off store cards or credit cards that were maxed for Christmas, etc. But, the thing is, like many things, as the days and weeks tick by so the enthusiasm wains and diminishes as the challenges and obstacles appear. Like the waves crashing against a ship if a course was never firmly plotted out, you will find yourself, slowly veering off course, maybe even running a ground.

So, what do you want for yourself for 2014?  If I learnt anything especially towards the end of 2013 it was that   ‘Marking Time’ is a stale mate position and not an option for experiencing the best of yourself in life.  Marking Time is neither going backward nor progressing forward. Its simply maintaining the status quo and remaining in your comfort zone. Keeping things stable and regular but not necessarily in the best place for you.  So nothing is undertaken that is challenging.  Nothing is done that threatens to change your current situation . Which may mean things seem fine, but the truth is exposure is what widens you to new experiences. Opens up your circle of influence to new friends and opportunities! The defining line is labelled ‘RISK!’

I love the story of how a Bald Eagle learns to fly. You would think because it’s a bird it would know. But it doesn’t. It learns through ‘imprinting’ ( observing its mother in everything that she does).  As the eaglet develops, there comes a point where the mother stops feeding it and instead flies above the nest. This gets the babies attention and he now has to strive some how to reach its mum.  She no longer provides food at this stage which means the Eaglet starts to loose weight and its desire to be up where its mum is increases. All the time it is flapping its wings, it grows stronger in its wings and lighter in weight in order to unknowingly move it into a stronger flying position, until the day it jumps out of the nest in an attempt to fly. Not every bird makes it. Some die, some get injured but a good percentage make it.

For me it show’s there are no guarantees in life. For the Eaglet to get to the next level in its life it has to take a major risk. It has to try in order to succeed.  ‘Marking Time’ is not an option if it is to be what is was designed to be which is an Eagle and not to stay an Eaglet.

It has to try in order to succeed

2014 could just be another year. No different to the years that have gone before. It could be a year of no planning, you simple drift and move with the ebb and flow of each new day. Or you could have a vision for your life. You could be writing it down and plotting it out so that you move though your days ‘With an end In Mind!’ So How is 2014 going to be for you?

Be focused and Be the Change you want to be.
