Covid 19 has change everything in how we do life.
Businesses both big and small have had to seriously review how they do service. In the UK, working from home was not common place in the beginning of 2020. However, because of lockdown, many large to medium scale businesses had to adapt quickly and become innovative in their ideas, in order to make ‘working from home’ happen for its employees, and to keep their services running. From local GP services, banking services, utility services, social services, schools, etc. All had to ensure processes, equipment and robust systems were enabled in order to function, in a now extraordinary world. The change was so stark and dramatic, that questions have since arisen around huge corporation sites and buildings which have stood empty and the rising question of “are all these buildings still required?” Once things start opening back up towards late Springto early Summerthis year, will all those office buildings ever be fully utilised again? Let alone needed?
In the City of London the loss in office and corporate staff, has changed the dynamics immensely. The impact to the viability of smaller supporting industries that rely on corporate employees as their customers, has been nothing short of catastrophic in places. The loss in footfall since March 2020 has meant, many businesses have gone under and simply won’t exist by Summer 2021 when business start to open up again.
The emotional and mental pressure to stay afloat has been hard. The hands of many organisations were forced by Covid to change and change fast. Technology became fundamental in enabling this to happen and I believe these changes are in many cases here to stay. Zoom and Team Meetings have become the norm in communicating, connecting and socialising, At first they were even the life line for families and friends to be able to see each other. Hence the upturn in the use of their services and demand requiring them to adapt fast.
Why Does Business Innovation Matter?
Covid truly is ” the unthinkable” situation, but innovation has always been an essential aspect of any business in order stay relevant, cost effective, finding new businesses and remaining profitable. Innovation carries risk, and depending on how much risk you are willing to take, can determine your existence.
Examples of this are Apple and their move to launch a number of new innovative products like the ipod during a time when it was going against trend and many believed it would not work. While Nokia and BlackBerry are the examples of missing the innovation boat. Therefore, innovation is truly about timing and recognising an opportunity or as I have heard it said “exploiting” and opportunity.
Just as it is important for corporations, businesses and technologies to adapt, so it is for us as individuals. It is important that we to are innovative and adaptive to change on a personal basis ourselves. In order to be at our best.
We may find that we are forced into having to change like many businesses have been this past year. Loosing your business, your job or being furloughed are not easy changes to adjust to. The reality of coping with such a crisis can be overwhelming. It takes courage and strength to find a way to not only adapt but to overcome such challenges. To somehow make something out of nothing.
But change can come in the smallest, yet simplest of things. That maybe focusing on your health both mental and physical. Simple walks that change your environment, getting you out of the house. Maybe you find that you think better outside the house than in side. Whatever works for you. Many a dream is built or life has been changed, by ideas and plans plotted while out walking or running.
I have read and watched some great stories of people who have started small initiatives during lockdown and found that their lives have changed. Some generating from having time to bake for instance, which became so popular that a business was born. Some ideas were just from caring about their community I.e exercise classes on Zoom or YouTube and demand grew.
One of the best adaptations I have seen recently, was a small business that provided tours or a taxi service in London via pedal bikes, who during Lockdown experienced their business literally dropped by 95%. Somehow, they recognised a gap and began to provided a service for vulnerable cancer patients to still maintain their medical appointments. Because the patience had minimal contact with people and were not within an enclosed vehicle they were less likely to be in contact with covid. This adaptation by the business generated a whole new line of revenue enabling its riders to stay in work, by providing a much needed service. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-55548820
Change may require thinking about something totally new. Maybe it’s something you have always wanted to do but their was never enough time or it just seemed the time was never right. I believe 2021 is still a challenging year, but so are the years ahead, to be fair. So to go for your dream now, really is as gooder time as time as any.
Anyone in business now has to find courage. Whether it is to start or whether it is to keep going.
Ideas come to us all the time. But not many of us turn these ideas into realities. Is there anything you would like to do this year? It doesn’t have to be starting a business, but maybe its picking up something you use to do? Maybe walks could be combined with photography? Maybe having more time could allow you to explore your crafting side? Truth is it’s never to late to pick up your dream.
Well until the next post. Be the change you want to see.
I am no Cryto-guru. My knowledge of crypto currency is minimal but Life lessons can be drawn from any situation.
In my post Timing Is Everything! I shared on the importance of timing. So, if you have been following Bitcoin you will know it has exceeded past performances on Monday, reaching $34000! Before slipping back to around $30000 for one coin!! For those whose world is Bitcoin, their excitement must be off the scales right now. Whilst for many in the banking world the contrast couldn’t be more different with an immense downturn to battle against. However, for anyone who is truly into doing the minimal in effort, simply buying or invest in Bitcoin and then watching, they are the benefactors of a passive means of income.
Basically, the investment is increasing whilst they are not doing a thing.
Passive income is that place where money works for you whether you are awake or asleep. In the office or on holiday.
It is never a good thing to be dependent on one single egg or one Golden Goose.
Even if that Golden Goose is crypto, like Bitcoin. It is still important to have multiple eggs in your basket. A number of things that work passively for you.
Multiple streams of income has always been the wisest mode for living. One job, one wage, one source of income has always been a recipe for struggle, should anything go wrong.
Leaving your future in the hope of a single pension is also a vulnerability. Income coming in from multiple directions is always better than just one.
So what could become a passive income for you? The unwritten book? The undeveloped App still a mear idea? The new online training program you have had in mind for months? Even your Blog could become an income earner. But, to get a passive income into a position where it has become successful is a challenge, but when you do, it is the best thing you could have.
Is this the time, the year to shift this from a thought into an actuality?
Be the change you want to see.
Happy New Year! Welcome to my blog if this is your first visit, and thank you for visiting again if you have been here before:-)
2020 was certainly a year of dramatic change and this year begins with the legacies of 2020 driving our economic decisions and current outcomes. It would be easy to come into this year with very little or no hope at all.
But that is not my heart, because my faith says to speak life and to have hope in the one that created all things. Challenges and difficulties happen and will constantly happen. Yet, throughout time people continue to have dreams and plans and achieve amazing things, in a world that told them they “could not!” “Not now – the time is wrong!” “You can’t!”
Last year may have you feeling as if you are on the loosing team in life. The underdog of life. Nothing ever goes right. You have more against you, than for you. But the beauty about a competive game like football (Soccer to American’s) Basketball, etc. Are the time outs when your Coach sees what’s happen to the team and what needs to change and shares strategies to the team to improve and change what has happened so far! The past can never be change but what is yet to be played can be!
The past can never be change but what is yet to be played can be!
Change starts in the mind! Cultivate and feed negative things and hope gets consumed leaving you reaping more of what you don’t want.
Cultivate change that fuels growth of positive new things and inevitably you will see the benefits.
Sometimes we find ourself in the position where “the tail is wagging the dog!” Instead of “The dog wagging its tail.”
What do I mean? I mean, instead of our thinking governing our emotions and actions. Instead, our emotions drive our thinking and subsequent actions.
Half-time is the point in your life where you take time out to rethink! Regroup! Re-strategies in order to plan a new change.
Challenge is when you find and implement resilience. Resilience is our mental fight that enables us to get up, restart and move forward again.
John Maxwell says the following:-
- Changing your thinking changes your belief.
- Changing your belief changes your expectations.
- Changing your expectations changes your attitude.
- Changing your attitude changes your behaviour.
- Changing your behaviour changes your performance.
- Changing your performance changes your LIFE!
From Thinking For Change – Book
Personal Development is where we all start with ourself. Not to measure and compare ourselves against others. That is the most destructive thing you can do.
It’s about looking inwardly with a view to nurture and build you. By removing the things that inwardly take away from you and instead bring in what feeds you, adds to you and increases you.
Growth is a ccontinual thing. You are never to old, to educated, to poor, too far behind to grow. Change begins where you are. Growth moves you from where you are to the vision or goal you have in mind.
How will you win in 2021?
What will you read?
What are you listening to?
What new course did you have in mind to start?
What change do you want to make?
What needs to go?
What needs to be improved?
This is not about trying change everything all at once. But select one thing you wish to change and one new thing you wish to start?
Be intentional with these choices. Don’t just think about them. Start them and be diligent about keeping on top of them. Know that as you progress the next step for change will become evident to you!
Until my next post. Be the change you want to see.
The ability to give without expecting to receive is a sweet spot in life that is easily missed.
The ability to give without expecting to receive is a sweet spot in life that is easily missed.
I learnt this lesson years ago and never forgot it. Why? Because I was the benefactor, and it changed my life. The generosity of others enabled me to experience things and places I could not have afforded at the time. I learnt things about business and life. Made new contacts and connections, all because someone chose to bless me or invest in me. It taught me how fundamental it is to live generously.
No one us supposed to be the answer to every need. But taking time to even invest in one life changes everything for that person, project, business or event.
Giving is a principal that is found in all Faith’s and event without a faith it is still understood an important character builder.
Living a life that displays generosity also teaches generosity. Truth is, you never know whose watching let alone learning and changing their life because of what they have seen and experienced.
Generosity, being kind. We certainly do need more of it today.
It is not just about financial donations. But donating those things that never get used, but sit idly in the house somewhere. Clothes, food, toys, books, etc. It could also be having time to listen really listen to someone. Being a wise voice. Small acts of kindness, truly have their place and are able to make such a difference.
Giving is said to also bring health benefits. Giving freely still feeds back to the giver. Just like there is something about seeing someone progress or grow so it is with giving. It feeds back into your mental and emotional health.
So be that difference. No matter how small, a ripple of good is created that moves on in life impact who it touches.
So be the change you want to see.
Some conversations are never cheery. They are instead uncomfortable. Nevertheless, they are relevant.
How you look at things can be ftom either a positive or negative view point. The glass is half empty or half full. But there are some conversations where the benefit sits in the reality of the inevitable, the thing that can never be changed. I think this is the view of my post today.
Often times we can see time as the thing we use to measure life outside of ourselves. The clock on the wall. The time on our phones, our iPad, etc. The day of the week. The month the year.
Then, once a year we align our lives to it, (time that is), due to a significant event I.e a birthday, an anniversary, a memorial.
But like the falling sand in an hour glass, we are all allotted an unknown number of days here on earth. No one knows what that figure is for themself. Yet if you were to consider each grain of sand representing a moment of your life shifting from now – time present to time past. Actually, you realise every moment and every second of your life is valuable. Nothing about your day is invaluable and inconsequential.
It only feels unimportant because we don’t have a value or appreciation of it.
That is why I guess, anyone who has almost lost their life has such a different perspective on life and time. Why? Because they see time and their life as one in the same thing. Hence, the value is in what you are doing with your life throughout each day. Are you using your time wisely and intentionally?
If every falling grain of sand is a moment of your life that can no longer be repeated then the sand that is before you needs to fall through good decisions and choices for your life.
Life and time are both precious and valuable. Spend them well.
Don’t get caught up in pointless arguments and disagreements. Things that spiral you and your life down the wrong road. Because of other peoples agendas, poor behaviours or negativity.
This post has come out of some sad news I heard yesterday. The unexpected loss of someone. I was listening to them only last Tuesday, in a discussion group. Full of life. Articulate, intelligent. Always able to bring another angle, to make you think differently in a discussion due to the wider perspective that they bring in. Someone who did alot in their community. Yet on Thursday, two days later, they were no longer here. They had meetings to fulfil on Thursday. They were to join the discussion group the following Tuesday. Yet two days later they were no longer here.
So do all you can do for today because as the saying goes. Tomorrow is not guaranteed to us.
Until the next post. Be the change you want to see.
